If left untreated, it not only affects the person&#8217;s <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">eye health<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , causing the quality of life to decrease and the inability to perform some professions, but also prevents them from socializing due to aesthetic concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">So, what causes strabismus,<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> one of the oldest known disorders ? <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">What are the types of strabismus? By what methods is <\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><strong>strabismus<\/strong> , also called <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">eye misalignment<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , treated? Will an untreated <strong>strabismus<\/strong> go away on its own over time? The answers to all these questions are given under the relevant subheadings below.<\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Causes of Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Although the exact cause cannot be stated, it is possible to mention some factors that cause <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">strabismus :<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The eyes move with the synchronized work of six muscle groups, two of which are oblique and four rectus muscles. The reason why <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> usually occurs is the disruption of harmony between these muscles, whose strength increases or decreases. Also, some diseases that affect the control center area of \u200b\u200bthese muscles in the brain (such as hydrocephalus, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy) also <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">cause eye misalignment<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">High fever and accidents in childhood, etc. <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> may also occur after trauma. Additionally, the baby is born prematurely or with low birth weight, has a seizure, or experiences some postnatal trauma, which are also <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">among the causes of eye misalignment<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Common <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">causes of strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> include structural disorders (neurological, functional or abnormal conditions in the muscles) and some eye-related disorders (such as glaucoma, cataracts). <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> may also be a reflection of high blood pressure, diabetes, and some tumors that develop in the brain or inside the eye (Strabismus, which appears suddenly, requires detailed examination, as it may be a sign of the presence of a tumor).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Apart from all these reasons, it is known that <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">genetic factors<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> play a role in strabismus. Although there is a high risk of inheriting <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">eye strain from the next generation, <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">strabismus does not occur<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> in every child who has a strabismic member(s) in their family .<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Types of Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drcagatay.com\/sasilik\/\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Strabismus<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> has been classified in different ways by approaching it from different angles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Nonparalytic and paralytic strabismus, whether there is muscle paralysis (stroke) or not; non-accommodative, accommodative and partially <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">accommodative strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , based on the relationship of strabismus with accommodation (the function of the eyes to adapt and focus); monocular and alternating strabismus, whether the deviation is always seen in one eye or in one right and one left eye; constant and intermittent strabismus, whether strabismus is always present or not; congenital and acquired strabismus, age of onset of strabismus; comitant and incompatible strabismus, depending on the angle of deviation (whether it changes according to the direction of gaze); Manifest and latent strabismus are classifications made by looking at whether the strabismus is clearly noticeable from the front.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Apart from these classifications, there is also a classification based <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">on the direction of strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> . Accordingly, <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">eye deviations<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> are divided into groups as inward, outward, upward, downward and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Eye Turning Inward (Esotropia)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Among the types of strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> performed by looking at the direction of deviation, the most common one in children is inward deviation. Strabismus in this group, also called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drcagatay.com\/gozde-ice-kayma\/\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">esotropia<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , is encountered in approximately half of <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">the strabismus cases<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> seen in childhood (especially in children between the ages of 1.5 and 4) .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Non-accommodative, accommodative and partially accommodative are prominent among the types of esotropia. When <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">the eye shifts inwards<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , there is a high probability that hypermetropia refractive error will also exist. Esotropia that develops due to hypermetropia is called <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">accommodative esotropia<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , and such <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">inward shifts<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> are encountered more frequently than other types.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Treatment with glasses is the first method used <strong>in accommodative esotropia<\/strong> . If the shift continues, even partially, despite treatment with glasses, this is called <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">partial accommodative esotropia<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> . Even if the refractive error is corrected with glasses, if there is no regression <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">in the inward deviation<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> of the eyes, there is <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">non-accommodative esotropia .<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Even though there is no refractive error, <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">inward deviation<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> of the eye may occur. Especially in adults, esotropia caused by nerve paralysis may be encountered. These patients can be treated with neurotoxin injection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Inward shifts that<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> appear until the baby is 6 months old are defined as <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">infantile esotropia<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> (congenital inward slippage). (Infantile esotropia can sometimes occur between 6-12 months). This type <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">of strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> can be corrected by surgical intervention before the baby reaches the age of 2, because <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">binocular vision<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> can only be achieved with this method. It occurs during childhood (especially over the age of 5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Exotropia<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , which can be seen in one or both eyes, is often accompanied by fatigue, etc. Although it may occur intermittently for various reasons, it may also be chronic. It is often observed that it increases when the patient looks away. It is possible <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">that outward deviations of the eye<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> may not be clearly noticed by the patient, but may attract the attention of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drcagatay.com\/gozde-disa-kayma\/\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">There are different types<a href=\"https:\/\/drcagatay.com\/gozde-disa-kayma\/\"><strong> of eye deviations<\/strong><\/a> . Intermittent exotropias (intermittent) usually appear at the age of 2 and are more prominent in school-aged children (around 7 years of age) and develop without any eye disorder.Surgical intervention is preferred for treatment when<\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> intermittent outward movements, which<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> usually become evident when the person is sleepy or tired,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">There is also a congenital type <strong>of exotropia other than <\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">intermittent outward shifting<\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> (rarely seen). As with <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">congenital introversion , <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">congenital extroversion<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> usually occurs before the baby reaches the first 6 months. It is divided into chronic or occasional. <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Outward shifts<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , which occur from birth, are chronic and can cause <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">amblyopia .<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Upward Shift of the Eye (Hypertropia)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Although it is rare, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drcagatay.com\/gozde-yukari-kayma\/\"><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">eye deviation<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , called <strong>hypertropia , can be a symptom of serious disorders such as <\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">4th nerve palsy<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> (which stimulates the superior oblique muscle), tumors in the eye socket, and goiter. Apart from these, it may exist from birth without any known cause or may occur due to trauma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">There is also the possibility that latent strabismus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> may increase in the future and cause <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">hypertropia<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> . A detailed investigation of the underlying cause is essential both to determine the correct treatment method and to increase the chance of eliminating the disease. Especially in cases where <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">double vision<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> increases, <\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">surgical treatment<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> is usually used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Hypertropia<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> can be seen in some or all gaze positions .
